º What is an Atheist? |
Amadán's Atheism PageLast updated January 3, 2004 This Page Will No Longer Be Updated.Instead, read my blog. Yes, I finally jumped on the bandwagon and started a blog. I will leave this page here as the "entry point" to my website and my blog for people arriving here looking for atheist writings. My old essays will remain where they are as well (see the list 'o links to the left). However, any future essays I write on the subject of atheism will be found in my blog. If you want to respond to my essays, please do it by leaving comments in my blog as well, rather than by sending me e-mail. visitors so far. Welcome to Amadán's Atheism Page! Here I will share my thoughts about science and religion, skepticism, and whatever else seems relevant. (I also write essays about other subjects; see my Essays & Rants page for more.) I am an Atheist, a Skeptic, and a RationalistI'd like to state at the outset that I consider myself a "moderate atheist," which is to say, I am not "anti-religious." I do not hold all religious believers in contempt, I do not believe that having faith means you are necessarily ignorant or stupid, and I do not campaign against religion. Nor do I rant about the "evils" of religion, bringing up the same tired old examples of the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc. I do have major problems with certain religious beliefs, and the behavior of certain religious believers, and I have no problem expressing my views in a provocative manner (see my essays). I also strongly believe in the separation of church and state. And ultimately, I believe that religion is an irrational (in the literal, not pejorative, sense of the word) belief system on the same level as any other superstition. Religion is not necessarily harmful, and in some ways, I think it can serve a valuable function in society. However, it is an inferior tool for coping with the world, and in my opinion, humanity would be better off progressing beyond the need for religion. No doubt some people reading this are already offended. I do endeavor not to come off as hostile to the very concept of religion. Tolerance is a virtue that should be practiced by believers and non-believers alike, and yes, I have seen too many examples of atheists who are as bigoted as any religious fanatic. However, the fact is, I am an atheist. Which means my beliefs are necessarily at odds with those of anyone who is not an atheist. If you can handle exposure to worldviews that don't conform to your own without feeling threatened, then welcome to my world. If not, welcome anyway, but I make no apologies for pissing anyone off.
